The Last Things

Herman Bavinck, The Last Things: Hope for This World and the Next. Edited with an introduction by John Bolt; translated by John Vriend.  Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 1996.

This two-hundred page paperback is a translation of the author’s entire locus on eschatology in his mature edition of Reformed Dogmatics: “The Spirit Makes All Things New.” It is the society’s first publication project, designed to call attention to eventual completion of the entire project in English translation. Bavinck’s eschatological material is divided into three parts: “The Intermediate State,” “The Return of Christ,” and “The Consummation.” His salvation-historical approach to the interpretation of prophecy, thoughtful rejection of universalism and triumphalism, and pastoral sensitivity concerning believers facing end-of-life questions and issues all commend the material to modern readers.
